Newtonian Rummy: Tug-of-War Edition

Game Design Document

Version: 1.2 (2026-01-18) • Status: Production Ready
Designer: Guillermo Ithier
Document ID: NR-GDD-v1.2

Format

Tactical team card game • 2–6 players (best 4 as 2v2) • 10–15 min • Simultaneous reveal

Win condition: Push the shared block to your edge (+5 Blue / −5 Red)

Design Intent

Students often treat F = ma as a plug-in formula and miss the causal story: forces oppose, net force determines acceleration, and balanced forces imply ΣF = 0. This game makes that logic operational: teams must build valid M × A = F systems to generate force, then resolve ΣF by comparing team totals. Block displacement externalizes net force, while Momentum rewards sustained advantage and Friction/Equilibrium create explicit balance-and-cancellation moments.

Core mechanics:

  • Equation-gated scoring: Only valid M × A = F melds generate full force
  • Simultaneous reveal: Commitment before information forces prediction and team coordination
  • Momentum (displacement bonus): Consecutive wins add up to +2 extra movement (cap) to model sustained net advantage without runaway
  • Counterplay: Friction halves and resets; Equilibrium cancels a key modifier

1) Learning Goals

Target learner: High school physics students who have been introduced to ΣF concepts
When to use: 10–15 minute station activity, review game, or exit-ticket assessment

Players will:

  • Apply F = ma as a constraint (building valid melds) rather than rote formula
  • Calculate net force from opposing contributions (ΣF = F₁ − F₂)
  • Recognize that equal opposing forces produce ΣF = 0 (no motion change)
  • Articulate how sustained net force in one direction produces increasing displacement

What’s assessed: Students must compute M × A validation and articulate why ties imply ΣF = 0.

Deck (52 cards total)

4 Categories × 13 ranks

Category

Number Cards (1–10)

Face Cards (J, Q, K)

M (Mass)

M1–M10

MJ, MQ, MK

A (Acceleration)

A1–A10

AJ, AQ, AK

F (Force)

F1–F10

FJ, FQ, FK

V (Velocity)

V1–V10

VJ, VQ, VK

Face card effects (regardless of category):

  • J (Impulse): Multiply your team’s total force by 1.5 (round up)
  • Q (Friction): Halve opponent’s total force (round down); reset their Momentum
  • K (Equilibrium): Cancel one opposing J or Q

V number cards (1–10) have no mechanical effect in base rules; reserve for expansion. V face cards function normally.

This can be printed as a custom deck or mapped onto a standard 52-card deck via a reference sheet.

3) Win / End Conditions

Immediate win: Block reaches +5 (Blue wins) or −5 (Red wins).

Deck out: If deck cannot refill hands, game ends immediately. Team with block on their side of 0 wins; at 0 = draw.

Stalemate (optional): Two consecutive ties → draw.

4) Setup (≤2 minutes)

  1. Place block at position 0
  2. Set Momentum to (Direction = None, StreakCount = 0)
  3. Shuffle deck; deal 5 cards to each player
  4. Place remaining cards face-down as draw pile; leave space for shared discard pile
  5. Assign teams: Blue (aims for +5) vs Red (aims for −5)

5) Valid Plays

Each player chooses one play per round:

5.1 System Meld (Full Force)

Play three cards: one M, one A, one F.

Validity rule: M × A must equal F exactly.

Example

M × A

F

Valid?

Force Generated

M2 + A4 + F8

2 × 4 = 8

8

8

M3 + A3 + F9

3 × 3 = 9

9

9

M2 + A3 + F8

2 × 3 = 6

8

0 (invalid)

If valid: Team generates Force = the F card’s value.
If invalid: Meld is discarded with no effect.

Reveal finality: Teams may verify validity before reveal, but once revealed, plays cannot be changed.

Sample meld layout:

        BLUE TEAM                    RED TEAM

    ┌─────┐ ┌─────┐ ┌─────┐     ┌─────┐ ┌─────┐ ┌─────┐

       2  ×   4   =   8  ✓         3  ×   3   =   9  ✓

5.2 Partial Force (F Card Alone)

Play a single F card without M and A components.

Effect: Generate ⌊F ÷ 2⌋ force (round down).

5.3 Modifier Cards (Face Cards)

Each player may play at most one face card per round (alone or alongside a meld/partial).

Card

Name

Effect

J

Impulse

Multiply your team’s total force by 1.5, round up

Q

Friction

Halve opponent’s total force (round down); reset their Momentum to (None, 0)

K

Equilibrium

Cancel one opposing J or Q played this round

Stacking rule: Only one J and one Q may affect each team per round. If multiple are played, the playing team chooses which applies.

6) Round Flow

  1. Draw: All players draw back to 5 cards
  2. Plan: Each player secretly selects their play
  3. Reveal: All chosen plays flip simultaneously
  4. Resolve: Follow Resolution Order (§7)
  5. Discard: All played cards go to shared discard pile
  6. Check End: Win condition met? If not, begin next round
  7. Reshuffle: When draw pile empties, shuffle discard into new draw pile

7) Resolution Order (Single Source of Truth)

Resolve in this exact sequence:

Step

Action

1

K (Equilibrium): Each K cancels one opposing J or Q. Cancelled cards have no effect.

2

Q (Friction) — mark targets: Surviving Q cards will halve opponent’s force and reset their Momentum. Mark affected teams.

3

Calculate base force: Sum all valid melds + partial forces for each team.

4

J (Impulse): Multiply marked team’s base force by 1.5, round up.

5

Apply Friction: Halve marked teams’ totals (round down); set their Momentum to (None, 0).

6

Compare totals: Higher team = winner. Equal = tie.

7

Move block: Per §8.

8

Update Momentum: Per §8. (Friction resets at Step 5 are definitive; affected teams do not participate in this step.)

8) Movement & Momentum (Single Source of Truth)

Step 1 — Net Force Difference

Let BlueTotal and RedTotal be the final team totals after modifiers.

Δ = |BlueTotal − RedTotal|

Step 2 — Determine Winner

  • If BlueTotal > RedTotal: Winner = Blue
  • If RedTotal > BlueTotal: Winner = Red
  • If equal: Tie (see §8.4)

Step 3 — Update Momentum & Calculate Bonus

Track Momentum as (Direction, StreakCount).

Update rules (apply first):

  • If Winner = Direction: StreakCount += 1
  • If Winner ≠ Direction: Direction = Winner; StreakCount = 1
  • If Tie: Direction = None; StreakCount = 0

Momentum Bonus (calculate from updated StreakCount, apply this round):

Momentum Bonus = min(StreakCount − 1, 2)

StreakCount (after update)

Bonus (this round)

1 (first win in direction)

0

2 (second consecutive)

1

3+ (third or more)

2

Step 4 — Move Block

TotalMove = Δ + Momentum Bonus

Move the block TotalMove spaces toward the Winner.

If movement would pass +5 or −5, clamp to the edge and end immediately (win).

8.4 Ties

If team forces are equal:

  • Block doesn’t move
  • Momentum resets: (Direction = None, StreakCount = 0)
  • Track consecutive ties for optional stalemate rule

9) Worked Examples

Example A: Basic Force Comparison

Round 1: Momentum = (None, 0).

  • Blue: M2 + A4 + F8 → valid → 8 Force
  • Red: M3 + A3 + F9 → valid → 9 Force
  • Δ = 1
  • Momentum update: Winner = Red ≠ Direction (None), so Direction = Red, StreakCount = 1
  • Bonus: min(1 − 1, 2) = 0
  • TotalMove: 1 + 0 = 1 → Block moves 1 toward Red

Example B: Momentum Building

Round 2: Red won Round 1, so Momentum = (Red, 1).

  • Blue: F6 → 3 Force (partial)
  • Red: M2 + A5 + F10 → 10 Force
  • Δ = 7
  • Momentum update: Winner = Red = Direction, so StreakCount: 1 → 2
  • Bonus (from updated StreakCount): min(2 − 1, 2) = 1
  • TotalMove: 7 + 1 = 8 → Block moves 8 toward Red

Example C: Friction Disrupts Momentum

Setup: Red has Momentum = (Red, 3). Block at −3.

  • Blue: Q (Friction) + M2 + A4 + F8 → 8 Force
  • Red: M3 + A3 + F9 → 9 Force

Resolution:

  1. No K → Friction survives
  2. Mark Red for Friction
  3. Base forces: Blue 8, Red 9
  4. No J
  5. Friction applied: Red halved (9 → 4); Red Momentum reset to (None, 0)
  6. BlueTotal = 8, RedTotal = 4 → Winner = Blue
  7. Δ = 4
  8. Momentum update: Blue wins; Red was reset by Friction (Step 5) so Red does not participate. Blue: Direction = Blue, StreakCount = 1. Bonus = min(1 − 1, 2) = 0
  9. TotalMove: 4 + 0 = 4 → Block moves from −3 to +1

Example D: Equilibrium Cancels Friction

Setup: Blue has Momentum = (Blue, 2).

  • Blue: K (Equilibrium) + M2 + A3 + F6 → 6 Force
  • Red: Q (Friction) + F8 → 4 Force (partial)

Resolution:

  1. K cancels Q → Friction has no effect
  2. No surviving Q
  3. Base forces: Blue 6, Red 4
  4. No surviving J
  5. No Friction to apply
  6. BlueTotal = 6, RedTotal = 4 → Winner = Blue
  7. Δ = 2
  8. Momentum update: Winner = Blue = Direction, so StreakCount: 2 → 3. Bonus = min(3 − 1, 2) = 2
  9. TotalMove: 2 + 2 = 4 → Block moves 4 toward Blue

10) Classroom Integration

Table Talk Prompts

  • Before reveal: “What’s your predicted ΣF for each team?”
  • After reveal: “Calculate net force and state the resulting motion.”
  • After movement: “Why did Momentum apply (or not)?”

Discussion Questions

  • “When is a partial force play strategically better than passing?”
  • “How does Friction model real friction’s effect on motion?”
  • “Why does sustained net force produce increasing displacement?”

Quick Rulings

Issue

Resolution

Invalid meld played

Discard with no force generated

Play disputed after reveal

Plays are final once revealed

Momentum forgotten

Default to StreakCount = 0

Card shortage

Draw as many as available

Multiple Q/J targeting same team

Only one applies (playing team chooses)

11) Tuning Notes

Adjustment

When to Use

Extend track to ±7

Games end too fast

Cap Momentum Bonus at +1

Games drag or Momentum feels too strong

Remove cap (use StreakCount − 1 directly)

Advanced players who want high-variance swings

Allow “wild” melds

Valid melds too rare for younger players

Remove face cards

Simplified version for introducing core loop

12) Referee Checklist

  • ✅ All melds valid? (M × A = F exactly)
  • ✅ K played? → Cancel one opposing J or Q
  • ✅ Q played and survived? → Halve opponent’s force; reset their Momentum at Step 5
  • ✅ J played and survived? → Multiply team’s force by 1.5, round up
  • ✅ Calculate Δ = |Blue − Red|
  • ✅ Update Momentum (Direction, StreakCount) — Friction-reset teams skip this
  • ✅ Calculate Bonus = min(StreakCount − 1, 2) from updated value
  • ✅ Move block TotalMove = Δ + Bonus; clamp at edge → immediate win
  • ✅ All players draw to 5; reshuffle if needed
