Classroom Use: Warm-up, retrieval practice, review stations, sub-day activity
1) Core Design Claim
A fast, replayable card game that builds physics topic fluency through simultaneous reveal + pattern calls. Students repeatedly map icons to topic language, then make risk-managed, time-pressured decisions to claim “unique” or “universal” patterns on the table. The game’s educational value is that correct topic naming becomes instrumental to winning, and the penalty system discourages random guessing.
2) Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Rapidly identify and name targeted physics topics from iconography.
- Distinguish common topic familiess: forces vs motion descriptors (e.g., Friction vs Acceleration).
- Use topic language consistently in verbal calls (topics, not colors).
- Improve retrieval speed and accuracy under pressure (desirable difficulty).
- (Optional Challenge Mode) Construct a coherent physics “micro-narrative” linking three topics.
3) Components
3.1 Topic Cards (Main Deck)
Each card shows exactly one topic via a color + icon (as in your diagram).
Calls must use topic names, not colors.
Topic Map (Card Face Standard)
- Pink on white: Pull
- Yellow on white: Friction
- Green on white: Air Resistance
- Blue on white: Gravity
- Green (motion icon): Projectile
- Pink (motion icon): Circular Motion
- Orange (motion icon): Acceleration
- Blue (motion icon): Changing Direction
Recommended deck composition (table-proof):
- 8 topics × 6 copies each = 48 cards (balanced, supports 2–6 players well)
You can scale copies per topic (4–8 each) based on desired rarity.
3.2 Optional Modules
- Challenge Cards (recommended: 4–6 cards in deck)
- Pattern Cards (Challenge-only; recommended: 10–16 cards)
4) Win Conditions (choose one before play)
Option A — Classroom Standard: First player to win 5 rounds.
Option B — Attrition: Be the last player holding cards.
Option C — Timed: Most rounds won after 10 minutes.
Use Option A for predictable pacing.
5) Setup
- Shuffle all Topic Cards (and optionally add Challenge Cards).
- Deal all cards evenly. Each player forms a face-down personal deck.
- Confirm aloud: “Calls must use topic names, not colors.”
No hand: players do not hold a separate hand; all actions come from the top of the deck.
6) Core Round Structure
6.1 Round Start (Simultaneous Reveal)
All players with cards flip the top card of their deck face-up into the center “pot.”
Elimination check: Any player who cannot flip a card (deck empty) is out.
6.2 Two Round Types
A) Standard Round (no visible in the pot)
Players race to call one of two valid patterns:
- Only Mine! [Topic]
Valid if the called Topic appears only on the caller’s face-up card and on no other face-up card. - Everyone But Me! [Topic]
Valid if the called Topic appears on every other face-up card in the pot and not on the caller’s card.
Winning the pot: The first player to make a correct call takes all face-up cards in the pot and places them on the bottom of their deck.
B) Challenge Round (any card visible in the pot)
A Challenge Round triggers if at least one card is face-up in the pot.
Step 1 — Bonus flip (cleanest implementation):
Each player who flipped a card immediately flips one additional card into the pot (if able).
Step 2 — Reveal a Pattern Card:
Flip 1 Pattern Card face-up. It specifies a 3-topic pattern to find in the pot.
Step 3 — Race + Story:
First player to identify the required 3-topic pattern and deliver a brief physics sequence/story that fits (≤10 seconds) wins the pot.
Stalemate rule:
If no one can complete the pattern, all players flip one more card into the pot. Continue until a valid pattern is present and claimed.
7) Pattern Card Specification (Challenge Mode)
To be table-proof, Pattern Cards must state:
- Whether order matters
- Ordered sequence: A → B → C (must be in that conceptual order, not spatial order)
- Unordered set: {A, B, C} (any order)
- Uniqueness rule
- “Use any matching cards in the pot; cards may not be reused for another claim in the same round.”
Recommended Pattern Card types (examples):
- Force → Motion change → Path
- Pull → Acceleration → Projectile
- Resistive force → speed behavior → state
- Air Resistance → Acceleration → Changing Direction (as “drag alters velocity vector”)
- Curvature set
- Changing Direction + Circular Motion + Acceleration
Note: You can keep stories light—just require causal coherence, not a full derivation.
8) Penalties and Risk (Wrong Call)
If a player makes a call that is incorrect:
- The round continues (the pot stays).
- The caller must pay a penalty: give 1 card from the top of their deck to each opponent’s deck bottom.
Elimination on inability to pay:
If the caller has fewer cards remaining than the number of opponents to pay, they are eliminated immediately, and pay what they can in clockwise order until they run out.
This penalty is the game’s key tension: it punishes impulsive guessing while still rewarding speed and confidence.
9) Tie Handling
Standard Round tie: if calls are simultaneous or indistinguishable, all players flip one additional card into the pot. Calls reopen immediately.
Challenge Round tie: same rule—flip one more card each, keep the same Pattern Card, race resumes.
10) Teacher / Referee Notes (Classroom Fit)
- Insist on topic language: “Friction,” not “yellow.”
- Keep rounds brisk; intervene only to adjudicate disputed calls.
- Encourage students to say the topic and point to the card(s).
- For Challenge stories, accept concise sequences; do not allow debates.
Optional accommodation (“Think–Beat–Call”):
After each reveal, enforce 2 seconds of silence before any calls. This reduces dominance by fastest responders while preserving excitement.
11) Why It Works (Design Rationale)
- Retrieval practice under time pressure: repeated rapid naming strengthens memory and fluency.
- Meaningful risk: wrong-call penalty forces metacognitive calibration (“Am I sure?”).
- High engagement with minimal rules: simultaneous reveal eliminates downtime.
- Language discipline: forcing topic names builds precise vocabulary and classroom discourse norms.
- Scalable complexity: Challenge Mode adds causal narration without requiring computation.
12) Assessment Hooks (Optional but Portfolio-Strong)
Teacher checklist (informal):
- Correctly names topics from icons
- Uses topic language consistently (not colors)
- Improves accuracy over time (fewer wrong calls)
- (Challenge) Produces a coherent causal story using the three topics
Exit prompt (2 minutes):
“Name three topics you saw today and give one real-world example for each.”
13) Balancing and Tuning Notes
- Topic frequency: keep counts even unless you intentionally want rarity.
- Penalty severity: “1 card to each opponent” is sharp; if eliminations feel too fast at 5–6 players, use a softer variant:
- Pay 2 total cards distributed one each to the next two players clockwise.
- Challenge density: too many cards can slow the game; start with 4 in a 48-card deck.
14) Differentiation and Extensions
- Add a second “deck tier” with more advanced topics (Net Force, Equilibrium, Impulse, Momentum).
- Require Challenge stories to include a sentence frame:
- “Because of ___, the object experiences ___, resulting in ___.”

Physics Battle: Topic Pattern Edition is a 2–6 player, 10–15 minute classroom card game that trains rapid physics vocabulary retrieval and topic discrimination through simultaneous reveal and real-time pattern calls (“Only Mine” / “Everyone But Me”). A calibrated wrong-call penalty creates meaningful risk and discourages guessing, while optional Challenge Mode adds causal narration by requiring students to link three topics into a coherent physics sequence.
